Lycée suédois integrated in St Dominique : over 20 years of friendship

Since the academic year 2001-2002, École Saint Dominique has hosted the Lycée suédois on its premises. The Lycée suédois is administered by École suédoise de Paris, which was founded in 1878 in association with the Swedish Church in Paris. At that time, École suédoise only provided primary education.

Rapid development in the 1990s made it necessary to create a lycée intended both for Swedish pupils residing in Paris with their parents and for Sweden-based pupils who wanted to spend a year in Paris. The project aroused the enthusiasm of the Ecole St Dominique, and once launched it allowed for collaboration between the two lycées.

Since 2001, many joint projects have been developed around various themes. French and Swedish pupils regularly have the opportunity to debate and work together on various topics in English. Each year, trips are organized in France as well as to Sweden. Occasional pedagogical exchanges allow teachers to enrich their practice. Finally, the celebration of different traditions in our two countries allows our students and teachers to get to know each other better.

The collaboration between our two lycées allows a daily dialogue between our two cultures and contributes in a very concrete way to the construction of Europe. We work together with Swedish and French pupils on integration issues. How to understand our differences? How to learn new things thanks to a different perspective of the world? Throughout the years, French and Swedish pupils have jointly debated, studied, discussed and written on different subjects in English.

We have travelled together to Normandie and Sweden. We have listened to lectures given by French politicians, French and Swedish writers, and several French classes have visited the Swedish Embassy in Paris. Swedish pupils have regularly been invited to French classrooms in order to sit in on courses and thus gain a better understanding of the French school system. Our French and Swedish colleagues have taken part in various school debates. We learn about each other's culture through our specific holidays, which we celebrate together.

In short, we already have many amazing memories together. We are delighted to be at Saint Dominique, and we would like to strengthen our bonds even more. For our Swedish students, it is a great honour to share a part of their schooling with French students. This unique experience is something that will remain etched in their minds throughout their lives.

To conclude: "Together we create Europe".
